Impact on education

Build an educational innovation ecosystem to influence china’s educational reform and the world’s educational development.

Our way of life, and education is no exception. China’s education is at the edge of comprehensive reforms. “Remodeling” and “fundamental change” are two core themes for educators around the world to tackle.

A core mission for Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is to explore and develop education models geared toward the needs of future society, and to influence China’s educational reform and global educational development. To this end, XJTLU has successively set up the ILEAD, the XJTLU Education Development Unit, and the Department of Education Studies, and created the Learning Mall to support future education. ILEAD was upgraded to the Future Education School on the 15th anniversary of XJTLU to advance its exploration and practices and exert greater influence on educational reforms and innovations.

As a visionary leader, XJTLU has been committed to creating a “future-oriented” and “innovation-driven” educational ecosystem over the past fifteen years. The university is a strong advocator of comprehensive development for students, believing that healthy growth of students should be the fundamental goal of running an educational institution. The innovation and reshaping of education must be future-oriented to help students survive and compete in the future, and facilitate the interaction and integration in the era of network, digitalization and intelligence.

This educational philosophy and XJTLU’s best practices have been endorsed by many stakeholders. Thousands of universities and millions of educators have followed suit, and XJTLU’s future-oriented education ecosystem attracted many participants including students, educators, parents, governments, non-profit organizations, industry communities, educational institutions and affiliated schools, who jointly build the ecosystem, create value, and share the benefits. As a result, many institutions have adjusted their philosophies and strategies, reforming the way their operations have been run. Many educators, with greater enthusiasm and confidence in educational reform, have begun to adjust their educational practices; an ever-increasing number of students and families have been drawn to XJTLU as their choice of university; and many of XJTLU’s practices and theories have been included in new education policies. XJTLU has managed to direct the way in which education is transformed and upgraded.

XJTLU is building an innovative educational ecosystem through four strategies.

I. Create core products to lead the future of education, including training courses, education models, and school-running systems. These courses and systems are an embodiment of XJTLU’s education philosophy and aligned with the most important educational reform issues. They are the “core” of XJTLU’s efforts in leading the future of education. In the past fifteen years, we have launched the following core products:

  • Research-driven teaching model Research-led Learning and Teaching Programme
  • “Student-centered” university system
  • Education system with in-depth university-industry integration
  • Capability and quality-oriented curriculum
  • International-oriented basic education system

II. Build platforms to create a culture of communication, sharing and innovation, guide educational co-development, and promote XJTLU philosophy through communities. We have created several highly influential innovation platforms: We have created several highly influential innovation platforms: XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Award (a platform for teaching innovation of teachers), Association of Sustainable Teacher Development in Universities (a platform for colleges and universities to support teachers’ development), and the ILEAD talks (a localized innovation community landing in different cities). These platforms received over 50,000 interactions each month. At present, we are making every effort to build a Learning Supermarket to support online and offline hybrid teaching, as well as a new education innovation platform for the Greater Bay Area.

III. Build empowerment platforms to help stakeholders implement their innovative educational ideas. We have developed training and research projects and programs for a wide range of people including university leaders, middle management, heads of departments, teachers, administrators, student management staff, education internationalization personnel; primary and secondary school and kindergarten managers, front-line teachers; as well as parents and workers in social education institutions, to help them develop and push forward educational reform and innovation. Tens of thousands of educators from hundreds of educational institutions participate in those training activities every year.

The fourth is to nurture future leaders for the continuous innovation for future education through developing master and PhD level degree porgrammes.

IV. Create high-end education talent training system to nurture leadership for continuous upgrading and long-term healthy development of education in the future. We have successfully developed two master degree programs include MA Global Education, MA Child Development and Family Education, and the PhD programme in Education. In the near future there will be new degree programmes focusing on Digital Education, and we are also working on the Education Doctorate (EdD) programme, in an effort to cultivate a large number of leaders who are well versed in XJTLU’s educational philosophy, and are able to take lead in future reform and innovations in education.

Looking forward, we will always bear in mind our original mission, continue to expand and improve the educational innovation ecosystem, and honour our commitment to impact China’s educational reform and the world’s educational development.
