The Department of China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University aims to become a major centre for research on the development of Chinese society. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together consideration of history and culture, society and politics, business and economics. Understanding that research in the humanities and social sciences is often individual-based, staff nonetheless use the department as a collective resource and framework for intellectual inquiry.

The Department of China Studies has identified the following key research directions based on the strength of our academic team and the strategic direction of XJTLU:

  • Chinese society
  • Chinese politics and economy
  • Chinese history, literature and culture

Collective research project

The department collectively has a three-year project to consider the social phenomenon of urbanisation in China, entitled the Urban Project. This is a university-wide project that brings in staff from other departments.

The department has China talks and China studies academic seminars through semester time on Wednesday evenings.

The Department of China Studies welcomes students either as enrolled full time students on its own PhD programme, or as visiting students coming to study for one semester or a year. Applications are welcome.
