Staff and students from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University attended The 1st International Association of Southeast Asian Nations English Language Teaching Conference, Malacca, Malaysia.
More than 1,000 English language teachers, publishers, and academics from many different countries from within and outside the ASEAN region were in attendance.
Presenters at the conference included masters students from the Department of English at XJTLU and over 50 featured speakers including some of the most significant researchers and academics in English language teaching.
Dr Tamas Kiss (pictured above, centre right) was a featured speaker at the event, and introduced students to Alan Maley (centre left), series editor of the Oxford University Press Resource Books for Teachers series with whom Dr Kiss recently co-authored a book.
Other experts met by XJTLU staff and students included Professor Jack Richards (pictured above, left), author of widely-used classroom texts including the Cambridge Interchange series, prominent researcher and writer Rod Ellis, and writer, critic, and poet Professor Malachi Edwin Vethamani.
The conference welcomed not only English language teaching professionals, but also people working in language-related educational projects, such as British hip-hop artist Breis, storyteller Jan Blake (pictured below, right), and local writer and academic Lee Su Kim.
Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, the US ambassador to Malaysia, also spoke at the event, as well as Malaysian actress Pearlly Chua.
“The students were really impressed that they could approach and talk to these people because this brought their learning to life,” said Dr Kiss.
“It’s not every day that you take pictures of famous authors whose books you learned from the previous semester," he continued. "They also enjoyed the sessions and meeting with ELT professionals from a variety of countries and they were extremely proud that they could showcase their projects in such an international environment.”
The ASEAN-ELT 2018 conference was organised by University Putra Malaysia in collaboration with partners from other ASEAN countries.
