On 22 May, the University launched its Academy of Future Education and Academy of Film and Creative Technology and opened the XJTLU Learning Mall to the public at a conference organised by XJTLU’s Institute of Leadership and Education Advanced Development.
The new academies are committed to connecting schools and industries in education and the arts; the XJLTU Learning Mall is an online-onsite platform for lifelong learning, combining resources from quality education providers worldwide.
The academy launches and the opening of the XJTLU Learning Mall saw the official start of XJTLU 3.0, an education model the University first began exploring in 2018.
They are among the flagship projects of XJTLU 3.0, an education model in which XJTLU will explore how universities can leverage educational and societal resources to create an ecosystem that furthers education and innovation. The XJTLU 3.0 model joins other education models XJTLU is exploring:
- XJTLU 1.0: introduced when the University was founded, XJLTU 1.0 focuses on upgrading traditional education and exploring new models to prepare international specialised elite professionals and leaders
- XJTLU 2.0: initiated at XJTLU’s 10th anniversary, XJTLU 2.0 synergises resources and develops elite professionals and leaders for industries worldwide. XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) is a key example.
“The 15th anniversary marks the improvement of XJTLU 1.0, the deepening of 2.0, and the official start of 3.0,” said Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU.
“In the past 15 years, the University has been boldly innovating, keeping our eyes on the stars and feet on the ground. We are delighted to see our plans realised and the influence we have had on society.”
Other 3.0 projects are the XJTLU Wisdom Lake Academy of Pharmacy, established at the end of last year and dedicated to developing the pharmaceutical industry, and the XJTLU-JITRI Academy of Industrial Technology, founded in April this year.
XJTLU also plans to extend to China’s Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau, GBA) by establishing the XIPU Innovation and Education College (GBA) by the end of this month. The first phase of this College will include the XIPU Academy of Future Education (GBA), XIPU HeXie Academy (GBA), XIPU-IPwe IP+ Institute (GBA) and XIPU University-Industry Ecosystem Institute (GBA).
The XJTLU 3.0 model is a response to technology’s transformation of society, said Professor Xi.
“Digitisation and AI have blurred the line between different sectors of the society; universities have been redefined. What is the new definition of a university? Where will its significance and value come from? How will it exist? These are the questions that we aim to answer with XJTLU 3.0,” said Professor Xi.
“Universities should actively serve as the catalyst and connector between the school and society, thus creating an educational ecosystem that promotes interest-driven lifelong learning, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as the upgrade of enterprises and industries.”
The XJTLU Academy of Future Education incorporates and enhances the work of the University’s ILEAD, Educational Development Unit, Department of Educational Studies, and the Learning Mall.
“The Academy of Future Education is multifunctional: it can help transform teaching and learning, promote the application and spread of new technologies, and influence China and the world’s educational reform,” said Professor Xi.
“As part of an educational ecosystem, the Academy serves as a platform supporting interest-driven lifelong learning, innovation and entrepreneurship.”
Dr Xiaojun Zhang, Executive Dean of XJTLU Academy of Future Education, said the Academy's work to transform education is expected to grow.
“XJTLU’s mission is to exert a strong influence on the development of education in China and the world,” he said.
“The Academy has been pursuing and integrating this mission into our strategies and plans. In the future, the University’s exploration of education will expand in both scale and influence.”
As part of the anniversary celebration, the University and the Academy opened the XJTLU Learning Mall to learners, educators and innovators worldwide one year after its launch to University staff and students.
The Learning Mall, a platform that combines online and onsite educational resources into a unique offering, will provide strong support for XJTLU 3.0. The public can now visit learningmall.cn to browse and sign up for free or premium (paid) courses.
The event, which took place during ILEAD’s 6th Annual Conference on Higher Education Innovation and Case Sharing of XJTLU Education Exploration, was hosted by Professor Qiuling Chao, Vice President for Student Affairs and Information at XJTLU, pictured below. About 600 people from nearly 200 educational institutions across China attended, with 1 million views during the online live broadcast.
