ABSTRACT: President Xi Jinping’s characterization of “the profound change unseen in a century” captures the essence of the on-going power transition in the international system. This lecture applies IR theory to analyze some basic elements of this unseen change, e.g., the cycles of rise and fall of major powers. Increasingly the question of how to handle the grave geopolitical consequences of power shift has become a matter of peace or war, and thus affects all of us enormously.
