Research in the Department of Media and Communication is diverse, interdisciplinary, both theoretical and applied, and in tune with developments in technology and popular culture in today’s world. The department’s research focus on media and communication forms one of the prioritised research areas in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at XJTLU.
The Department organises regular research events, including the Research Lunch Seminar, and, as part of the School’s Research Seminar Series, invites researchers and scholars to campus for presentations, talks, and workshops. The Department’s four research clusters –Digital Technology and Changing Society; Culture, Creativity and Communication; Journalism and Society; and Screen Studies and Popular Culture – help facilitate collaboration, promote knowledge sharing, and foster a supportive environment for colleagues and students.
The Department also collaborates with the University Research Centre for Culture, Communication, and Society (CCCS) and partners with other prominent national and international higher education institutions to organize research events, including conferences. Notably, in July 2022, the department co-hosted the 49th annual conference of the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), with DMC organising pre-conferences in Suzhou.
Our staff engage in active research. They frequently present their work at prestigious international conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals and with world-leading academic publishers, and secure research grants from governments, academic funding bodies, and industry partners.
Student research also finds a major thrust at DMC. The school hosts PhD symposia, in collaboration with other universities. At the undergraduate level, students are encouraged to work with academic staff in the University’s student-led Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) projects. Students also participate in the Undergraduate Research Conference held annually by the School.
