Professional accreditation

RIBA International Validation

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is the first mainland Chinese university to gain unconditional Part 1 and Part 2 international validation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for our undergraduate and masters degrees, officially recognising the programmes as on par with other top architecture schools around the world.

In their last accreditation report, the RIBA board commended the ambitious vision of the department and the university, the dedication of the staff and the provision of “exceptional workshop facilities, studios and resources”, as well as the diversity and richness of the design briefs.

In previous visits the RIBA board also praised the Department for “creating a distinctive environment in which students learn from an international and Chinese context with an ambition to produce a new type of graduate, with an emphasis on human-centred architecture, for the emerging global context,” and for promoting the ambitious goal of challenging both Western and Chinese educational paradigms with an alternative model for Chinese architecture education.

Despite only being established in 2011, the BEng Architecture programme has rapidly become one of China’s most prestigious architecture courses, with students recruited from the top 5 percent in China’s university entrance examinations.

Current Head of Department Dr Davide Lombardi aims for the department “to be the best architecture department in China, offering a truly glocal experience. With our diverse and highly qualified academic staff and excellent facilities, we are well-placed to become exactly that.”

JBM Accreditation

XJTLU’s BEng Civil Engineering, BEng Architectural Engineering, MSc Civil Engineering, and MSc Sustainable Construction have all been accredited by the world’s leading professional body, the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), making XJTLU the first Sino-British university in China to receive JBM accreditation for both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

The JBM is made up of four major professional associations in the UK civil engineering sector: the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institution of Highway Engineers. JBM accreditation also means that our civil engineering degrees meet international quality standards, giving graduates an additional advantage when applying for further accreditation by international professional bodies.

Students who obtain a JBM-accredited Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree and a Master’s degree that satisfies further learning requirements will automatically meet the educational requirements of a Chartered Engineer from the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom, without the need for additional academic assessment.

JBM accreditation also means that these degree programmes can further apply for professional accreditation under the European Accreditation Scheme for Engineering Education (EUR-ACE). This accreditation will be recognised across the member states of the European Higher Education Area.

CSD Accreditation

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is the first university in the Chinese mainland to have BEng and MDes Industrial Design programmes officially accredited by the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD), an internationally recognised body for professional designers.

The accreditation provides XJTLU students with free Student Membership of the professional body, which allows them to get better job prospects, to access a large international network of peers and a large amount of resources.

CSD membership allows students to access a much wider network of professional designers working both in industry and academia, and foster their preparedness to the upcoming challenges of their career development.
