About the Institute

The XJTLU University Research Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (UES) is dedicated to research on local development and urbanisation in China. It integrates the multidisciplinary and international research strengths of the University and its synergetic and innovative ecology to explore a more intelligent, sustainable and high-quality development paradigm. The Research Centre works closely with government, industry and international institutions to provide a solid support for scientific research and create an international exchange and cooperation platform for expanded social impacts.

  • Cutting-edge research
We conduct research in sustainable urban and environmental development, covering issues such as social and economic transformation, ecological and environmental protection and public health influenced by urban dynamics.
  • Localised strategy-building
We interpret national urban and environmental policies and provide programme consultation to local governments with recommendations for action. Our institute nurtures localised strategy-building in light of international best practices.
  • Knowledge exchange
We establish a platform where researchers and external partners, such as governments, industries, local and international communities and other research institutes, can communicate and collaborate.
  • Technology innovation
We develop and apply urban and environmental technologies to better tackle urban development challenges and provide technological training for local enterprises and governments.
  • High-quality talent pool
We develop international networks and cultivate talents who can conduct practice-informed research and influence policy-making.
