On 10 September 2025, XJTLU Urban and Environmental Studies University Research Center (UES) held a seminar titled as Thoughts on the Compilation of the 15th Five-Year Plan and Its Development Focus. Zhan Li, Deputy Director of Suzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission, was invited as the main speaker. Combining the domestic and international situations with the actual development of Suzhou, the speaker shared strategic thoughts on issues such as building a national unified market, and the integration of the Yangtze River Delta,and discussed ten key issues of focus under the compilation of Suzhou’s 15th Five-Year Plan, including urban form, industrial innovation, education improvement, regional coordination, and development security.

“The 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) is a crucial period for China’s progress towards socialist modernization and for Suzhou’s shift towards the benchmark of high quality development. The series of activities has helped Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University to participate in the cooperation between government, industry, academia and research, and to promote the preparation of the 14th Five-Year Plan that meets the local situation and reflects the wishes of the public.

Call for papers of suggestions for the 14th Five-Year Plan of Suzhou Industrial Park

Achievements: Nearly 50 high-quality articles were received from government and industries, global institutions, universities, professional groups and individuals, and more than 100 suggestions were received. A total of 16 award-winning articles were selected, and 24 suggestions were actually included in the general plan and sub-plans of the 14th Five-Year Plan.
On 4 August 2025, the symposium “Suzhou Community Gardens: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” was successfully held at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s Suzhou Industrial Park Campus. The event was jointly organised by the University’s Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies and the School of Design.
This symposium aimed to establish a platform for learning and exchange by synthesising local Suzhou practices, drawing on innovative models from Shanghai and other regions, and exploring sustainable operational mechanisms alongside multi-stakeholder collaboration pathways for Suzhou’s community gardens.
