Study resources

As well as our extensive Library, we have a number of resources available to students to aid study and learning, including:

Software

Our computer services use the latest technologies and are updated regularly. Students have access to all of the major IT packages as well as subject-specific software such as Adobe CS6.0 for built environment students, Sage 50 Accounts Professional for accounting students, Altera (Quartus II) computer-aided design software for electrical and electronic engineering students, and a whole host of English language learning software, such as Road to IELTS, available through our Language Centre.

Laboratories and facilities

As well as multiple general-use computer rooms across campus, our departments are well-equipped with laboratories and facilities suitable for subject-specific study. For example, our Department of Biological Sciences has custom-designed cell culture laboratories, our Department of Chemistry has high-tech instruments such as spectrometers, modelling and construction workshops are accessible to students in our Department of Architecture and students in the Department of English, Culture and Communications can take advantage of an SDLTrados professional translation laboratory.

Support and advice

Academic advice

Dedicated academic advisers help you review your progress throughout your studies and deal with any study-related problems you may have. Class tutors are also available to listen to and help with any study-related problems.

Student counselling

University life can be exciting and yet stressful from time to time. Although we know that many students will have minimal problems adapting to their new environment, we have support services in place should you be finding it difficult. Our Mental Health and Development Centre is a confidential service that can support you to get the most out of your time at university or if you need to talk to someone about any concerns you have.

Student service centre

Our One-Stop Student Service Centre provides a range of services, mainly targeted towards our Mainland Chinese students. Services include:

  • If you need advice about any aspect of university life, the service centre can help. You can also consult their FAQ list for help and advice
  • Facilities applications, student ID card and booklet replacement, insurance claims, national scholarship applications as well as various other applications
  • The service centre aims to facilitate communication among students, parents and the University, so if you have any suggestions and complaints, you can contact us at onestop@xjtlu.edu.cn.

Student development advice centre

By integrating Eastern and Western culture and coordinating global resources, Xi’an Jiaotong-liverpool University (hereinafter referred to as ‘XJTLU’) has a campus culture of Diversity, Regularity, Innovation, Freedom and Trust. In order to help domestic students adapt into the international culture of XJTLU and become elites with noble personality, outstanding skills and International competitiveness, Student Development Advice Centre (hereinafter referred to as ‘SDAC’) coordinates various resources and provides comprehensive advisory and guidance services for students. It aims at providing effective supports for students as well as helping students achieve personal growth and development.

As one of the Four-Tutor System, Development Advisors focus on guiding students to realize ‘Three Transformations’ as advisors, coordinating various resources as coordinators and providing specialized supports as experts.

Development Advisors for undergraduate students provide corresponding supports according to different groups of students, including supports for freshemen and supports for senior students. The supports mainly include the following six aspects:Adaptation and Integration, Individual-Specific Attention, Specialized Support, Class Management, Information Release, Emergency Handling.

Student Development Advisor- Undergraduate

PG DA plays three key roles as ADVISER, FACILITATOR and COORDINATOR. As an advisor, PG DA supports students who come for advice or helps students who are confronted with difficulty or have potential risks. PG DAs will also correspondingly set up proactive contacts with students who might have encountered challenges at campus, integrate resources inside and outside the university, and facilitate your individual development.

Strategies and tips for new students

The 2021-2022 Undergraduate Student Guide is not just to help with your induction at the University and for guidance about campus life – it is an animated and interesting partner that will accompany you throughout the whole Year One first semester. In the form of to-do lists and a combination of online and offline activities, the handbook opens a different dimension of freshmen orientation spanning time and space, and collects the best strategies and tips for you to survive and thrive at XJTLU. When you accomplish all the ‘tasks for freshmen’ as per the requirements, you will have grown into a ‘young adult’, with the handbook as a record of your growth!

XJTLU Global provides a range of services to help make your experience at XJTLU go as smoothly as possible. Their services include:

  • Support processing your visa and residence permit
  • Booking your accommodation
  • Arranging basic medical insurance
  • Airport meet-and-greet for all international students arriving in China
  • Helping you get to know the local area and campus

IT services

Much of our computing resources are managed by our Management Information Technology and System office, who also provide free Wi-Fi access across campus, file server storage and printing services. A dedicated IT helpdesk is available to all students seven days a week.

Postgraduate student support

Postgraduate research students can access doctoral skills training through the Postgraduate Research Development Programme, which helps enhance their skills, and improve their research experience and career prospects. The Graduate School Office supports postgraduate students both before they start and during their studies at XJTLU.

Systems

Learning Mall Online is a secure, interactive, innovative online platform for managing learning and teaching content, resources and activities within XJTLU and beyond.

Connect (mahara)

Connect @ XJTLU is a fully featured electronic portfolio system with social networking features to create online learning communities.

Bigbluebutton

BigBlueButton is an online web conferencing tool that is integrated with the Learning Mall Online. Teachers can use it to create virtual classrooms for synchronous online learning and teaching or pre-recorded asynchronous instructions.

Mattermost

Mattermost is an online communication and collaboration platform designed to enhance learning, teaching and work processes across XJTLU
Our online systems make it easier for students and staff at the university to communicate, share information and collaborate, as well as enhancing the experience of learning and studying at XJTLU.

Career services

Our Career Development Office supports students in preparing for successful future careers and assists with work placements and job searches. The team’s services include lectures and seminars, CV and cover letter advice, workshops on interview techniques, business plans and career planning. The office also arranges external mentoring with industry professionals as well as maintaining a careers library with books and journals on career planning, together with IT resources to help you in your post-graduation job search.
