The department is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of research, believing that original research drives high-quality teaching. Based on the strengths of our academic team and the university’s strategic direction, the department’s research is clustered around the following areas:

  • Digital media: ethics, policy, online activism, participation.
  • Film: Chinese cinema, Hollywood cinema, European cinema, film adaptation, film and intermediality.
  • Journalism and public relations:global journalism, news framing, censorship, video production, science communication, political economy of media.
  • Cultural Studies: cultural and creative industries, visual communication, feminism, identity, memory, gender and sexuality, fandom, subculture, Chinese pop culture.

Our staff are active researchers. They regularly present their work at prestigious international conferences, and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as chapters and books with world-leading academic publishers. Together with Tsinghua University the department has been invited to organise the 2022 conference of the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), one of the most prestigious scholarly organizations in the field. The conference is to be held in Beijing and Suzhou.
